Barnaby and Me
Published in Hardcover by Gray & Co., Publishers (November, 1999)
Authors: Linn Sheldon, Nat Howard, Mike Olsiewski, Richard Osborne, and Ed Walsh
Average review score:

THIS BOOK BRINGS BACK SOME GREAT MEMORIES
I GREW UP WATCHING BARNABY FOR MANY YEARS AS A SMALL FRY. HE WAS AND STILL IS ONE OF MY HEROES. LINN SHELDON DOES A GREAT JOB DESCRIBING HIS LIFE, CAREER, AND ADVENTURES IN SHOW BIZ. HE IS VERY CREATIVE, HUMOROUS, DETAILED, AND WITTY. HE WRITES WITH CLASS AND DIGNITY. HIS TELLING OF THE DARK SIDE OF HIS LIFE (ALCOHOLISM) IS VERY HONEST, TOUCHING, AND HUMOROUS. I AM A RECOVERING ONE MYSELF. I CAN IDENTIFY WITH HIS FEELINGS AND EXPERIENCES. THIS IS A VERY TOUCHING LOOK AT A VERY LOVING AND CREATIVE MAN WHO BROUGHT A LOT OF JOY TO MANY CHILDREN IN CLEVELAND OVER A FEW DECADES. VERY VERY RECOMMENDED.

Barnaby & Me
Although it is about the life of a television performer, one who was a pioneer in the industry, I feel that this book is an easy read, fun, and hard to leave alone...I find myself referring to favorite chapters many, many times. This is not a book about Cleveland, it is a book about everyone. Someone should do a musical or movie about this author.

Beautifully written stories about a remarkable life
Like millions of others in this region, I grew up watching Barnaby on TV. Linn Sheldon was on television for 32 years as Barnaby, the elfin-eared pal of children and parents alike. Left to fend for himself at the age of seven, he lived by his wits and with the kindness of sympathetic citizens in Norwalk, Ohio. As a teenager he hitchhiked across America playing the banjo for meals, spent three years on the MGM lot, and returned to the Cleveland area to begin a career as actor and standup comic. In 1948 he joined WEWS-TV in Cleveland, the first TV station in the region, and his accounts of early televion are fascinating. In time his fame spread well beyond Cleveland to Westinghouse TV markets, and he did extensive work in Texas as well. As his career developed, so did his need for alchohol. He made and lost a fortune, married four times, and had serious bouts with depression. His stories about his drinking days and his brushes with the psychiatric community are at once moving and hilarious. Now retired and healthy again, he looks back on his life with the same kind of joy and sensitivity he imbued in the character of Barnaby. Reading it made me feel like a kid again enthralled with the musings of this wonderful elf.

Hardy Roses: An Organic Guide to Growing Frost- And Disease-Resistant Varieties
Published in Paperback by Storey Books (August, 1995)
Authors: Beth Powning and Robert A. Osborne
Average review score:

A Passionate guide for would be rose growers.
The author's passion for roses shows on every page. The details on soil, nourishment, planting location, climate are highly valuable. Even creating new roses is covered. The photos and history of every selected plant show lots of devoted research. The listing of Rose nurseries and organizations saves lots of planning time. Love that book.

Hardy Roses earns its space on my bookshelf!
This book is as useful as a reference as it is lovely to look at. Growing roses at my home in USDA hardiness zone 3 limits choices to a few shrubs found at the local garden center, but 'Hardy Roses' provides well-organized lists of additional choices one can find in catalogs. Want a rose that smells divine? Use the charts that indicate the degree of fragrance. Require disease resistant varieties? The lists tell you which ones are easy to keep healthy. Equally valuable are the lists of catalog suppliers, because chances are, these varieties won't be available at the local outlets. Cultural information is here too, but seems slanted toward shrub rose growers rather than us die-hards determined to grow hybrid teas at any cost in impossible conditions. Along with Ortho's 'All About Roses', 'Hardy Roses' is the most-used of my 20 or so books on roses, and is a very good value. I recommend that after you receive it, keep a dust cover on the paperback version so you can carry it around shopping with you without damaging its pretty cover.

The best book on growing hardy roses in cold climates.
This book inspires cold-climate gardeners to grow roses. The writing is clear and easy to understand and the photos are beautiful. It covers information from where to plant your roses (including a discussion on microclimates) to growing to starting roses from seed and cuttings. It reviews over 100 hardy roses and is written by someone who knows and loves roses. Great for beginners and seasoned rose growers

An excellent introduction to the Bible
This fun book is short (32 pages long), but tall and wide, making it easy for smaller hands to hold open. Using bright colors and informative sidebars, it talks about the Bible, giving a lot of information in a simple, easy-to-understand format. Along the way, the reader is treated to a picture search, a maze, and lots of other fun projects. If you wish to introduce a young person to the Bible, then I highly recommend that you get this book!

Captivating Read for children

Elementary-age children (and their parents!) will find this book theologically sound, filled with interesting information, and visually appealing. Gives great teaching on how children can make the Bible a part of their lives. A wonderful resource for captivating children with the uniqueness of God's word and its life-changing nature.

Making Sense of the Trinity: 3 Crucial Questions (3 Crucial Questions)
Published in Paperback by Baker Book House (April, 2000)
Authors: Millard J. Erickson and Grant R. Osborne
Average review score:

Surprisingly comprehensive in its relative briefness
I picked up this book by Millard Erickson expecting a rather basic look at trinitarianism that might prove helpful in discussing the doctrine of the Trinity on a basic level with folks who have introductory level questions about it. And while it's true that the book is predominately a beginner level book, I nonetheless found it to be quite thorough in a number of places that I found very rewarding.

The book is less than 100 pages, and in it, Erickson seeks to tackle three main questions - is the Trinity biblical, is it rationally coherent, and is it at all relevant to anything. While there have certainly been more exhaustive treatises written which address the first two questions, I thought that Erickson did a good job of analyzing them at a top level while still being pretty thorough. His analysis of deviations from the orthodox view of the Trinity was especially good for purposes of making it clear to the reader that the Trinity is an exacting doctrine that requires both exacting language and exacting thought in order to be true to the Bible.

Erickson's attempt at sorting through the rationality of the 'Three in One' aspect of the Trinity was also very interesting, as was his analysis of Trinitarian prayer. In particular, I appreciated his analysis of the functional subordination aspect of the Trinity that is too often neglected in other studies of the Trinity, as well as his proper focus on the Holy Spirit which is likewise treated almost as an afterthought in many studies of the Trinity.

Overall, I think this is an outstanding beginner level book that not only takes on basic questions with easy to follow answers, but also digs a bit to take on more difficult questions both Biblically and philosophically. An outstanding resource for one who wants to become firmly rooted in the orthodox doctrine of the Trinity.

Good scriptural and philosophical presentation
Though the previous reviewer was right in saying this is a short read, brevity does not mean lack of meaty content. Erickson dives in deep for just one-hundred pages. I hope to read it again soon to get a better grip on the content. Erickson does a great job of preseting both scriptural and philosophical arguments. His last section on the doctrine's importance and application to both individual and corporate worship/service unto God is also very helpful. A good book on a deep, but oh so important topic. Flaws in the nature of God ultimately equate a different gospel. The time has come for the church to stand against those within who are apathetic about rightly defining and acticulating this timeless truth.

A Triple Blessing
It's difficult to produce a thorough yet concise volume on such a deep and complex subject as God in Three Persons which sheds fresh light on the Trinity rather than rehashes of what others have written over the ages. Most appreciated is keeping Scripture in the magisterial role with reason/logic in the ministerial role as all good exegetes should. The author does an excellent, though brief, job of sketching the history of the doctrine's development, metaphysical considerations, and outlines the relevance of God as Triune to the Christian today. More helpful would be analogies that help get a handle on 3 in 1: Egg=Shell+White+Yolk; Water is H2O, 3 atoms in 1 molecule, as well as water existing simultaneously(like a Minnesota cloud) as vapor, condensation, hail (solid, liquid, gas); not 1+1+1=3, but 1x1x1=1; volume=LxWxH; U.S. Gov't is Legislative, Executive, Judicial branches; human is body, mind, spirit;Divine Family is Father and Son and Holy Spirit. There is a careful balance maintaining the integrity of God as three persons yet one essence or Being. Of animal beings, there are trillions of members; of human beings there are billions of members; of Supreme Being there are three members. For a more comprehensive treatment, read author's larger volume, God in Three Persons.

Miss Liberty's Guide to Film and Video: Movies for the Libertarian Millennium
Published in Paperback by Kingscote Publishing (30 May, 2001)
Author: Jon Osborne
Average review score:

MUST Reading for all Lovers of Liberty!
If you're a libertarian -- or any liberty-loving person -- this book will delight you! Unique, original, very well written, overflowing with valuable information!

Jon Osborne is a wonderful reviewer and researcher. Each review is succinctly written, interesting and informative. I especially enjoy the actual quotes from the movies.

You'll enjoy seeing your opinion in print; you'll be reminded of special movies you may have forgotten about or might not have thought of in the same light as the author; AND you'll discover treasures that will surprise, intrigue and delight you.

Talk about entertainment: You'll have hours and hours of fun just reading about the movies, but then you'll have the movies themselves to look forward to!

A great reference that I refer to over and over.

No need to waste your time watching movies that end up just making you mad -- check out the movie first in this book. Don't head for the video store or switch on the TV without it!

I have just one question for the author: when's the sequel coming out?

THE Best Film Guide
I like the libertarian slant to this witty and inciteful guide, but really, that's just icing on the cake. The book is a great compendium of good films, fun films, and godawful films that anyone (even commies) would want to see. Each film gets a synopsis and commentary on its Libertarian content, but any guide that lists "Ghostbusters" next to "The Girl Who Spelled Freedom" has got to be good. If the Marxist Guide to the Movies were this fun, I'd buy it too. A must for any Cineaste.

Rare free-market gems
I've been a subscriber to the Miss Liberty newsletter for three years. As a result of Osborne's reviews, I've discovered a number of difficult to find, but wonderful gems. For example, I loved the _The Man in the White Suit_ (1951), which stars a young Alec Guiness as a brilliant scientists who invents an indestructible fabric. It's a comedy that explores the obstacles innovators often face from entrenched interest groups. If it weren't for Osborne's reviews, I probably would not have found out about the movie.

Osborne writes well--dip into the book at random, and you will find insightful, witty commentary (even if the movie itself isn't particularly good.) I've already given copies to several of my libertarian/objectivist friends. Highly recommended!

Practical Guide to Creative Visualization: Manifest Your Desires
Published in Paperback by Llewellyn Publications (May, 1984)
Authors: Melita Denning, Osborne Phillips, and Carl Llewellyn Weschcke
Average review score:

Get this one instead of The Power of Now
The one to get. Goes nicely with Condensed Chaos by Phil Hine.

Practical Guide offers highly insightful, esoteric - but accessible - methods of visualizing your goals and making them happen.

Draws from ancient wisdom with a modern, immensely effective spin.

Very very good!

By far the best book on visualization
This is by far the best book on visualization that I have encountered. The authors were internationally recognized authorities on the Western Mysteries and of the Ogdoadic Tradition, a hermetic school of which the keywords are knowledge and regeneration. This excellent work deals with all the important aspects of visualization: realizing that the source of supply is spiritual, the power of music and song, establishing a desire on the astral, mental and spiritual planes. The authors have a knack for explaining things simply and practically. They show you how to create and maintain an image, and how to infuse it with the power of your higher self, and even tell you how to terminate a process of visualization should you no longer want it to proceed. More advanced techniques include the Star Technique, the Multiplication Technique and the Master Method, all of them very easy to carry out. The appendices include wisdom texts to assist learning and motivation, information on prayer and worship (like building an altar), and advice on maintain sound mental and physical health. There are illustrations explaining the stairway to success and the star technique, plus an I Ching hexagram. This is a classic work in the field and one I would recommend first to those wishing to explore creative visualization.

A Kabbalistic Guide to Creative Visualization
While it is never explcitly stated, this book provides a Kabbalistic guide to creative visualization. Its theory comes out of the concept of the Four Worlds on the Tree of Life. For those familiar with that theory, this book puts this powerful technique in a framework they already understand. For those unfamiliar, it should still work incredibly well.

The wonder of the Four Worlds is that the idea is so common sense that the authors never even directly mention it. They lay out progressive techniques which access each level of Mind without dwelling on heavy occult theory. In other words, this book is useful to everyone, regaurdless of whether or not you know what the Ruach is.

The book basically takes you through the formative stages of daydreaming, on to planning, concrete visualization, and charging with Divine power. There is also a quikie technique called "the Star" which helps with matters of immediate concern. The Master Technique, as they call it, could easily be modified for use with the Middle Pillar or similar Kabbalistic Exercise.

I'm very impressed with Denning and Phillips in general, and this book is another example of how woderful their work is.

The Singing Bible

Authors: Rick Osborne and Elaine Osborne

Wonderful, fun overview of the Bible for Kids
I found this set of tapes several years ago. It is a wonderful set and has fun, upbeat, and catchy songs that appeal to little kids and older ones as well. I liked going in the car on long rides because I could listen to all three tapes. It makes the Bible (especially the old test) come alive and make sense in the big picture--not just little snapshots.

Without a doubt, a worthwhile investment!
As much as my children enjoyed this tape, I must say, I never tired of hearing it. It is accurately written to entertaining music. Our first tape was destroyed, and I haven't hesitated to replace it. I highly recommend it to all parents. A great way to educate your child on God's Word.

The Singing Bible
As much as my children enjoyed this tape, I've got to tell you, I never tired of hearing it. Accurately written, the music is fantastic, it's just an overall great Bible lesson. We were all distraught when our first tape broke while in the player. I was even more upset when I found that my local Christian bookstore did not carry it. I'm delighted to find this site so that we can, once again, enjoy God's Word through this delightful work.

The Strang Cookbook For Cancer Prevention: A Complete Nutrition and Lifestyle Plan to Dramatically Lower Your Cancer Risk
Published in Hardcover by E P Dutton (April, 1998)
Authors: Laura Pensiero, Susan Oliveria, Michael Osborne, and Jacques Pepin
Average review score:

Cancer prevention info in a clear, concise fashion.
I began this book with the premise that there was little more I could learn about diet and lifestyle regarding cancer. As a former cancer patient, I've read anything and everything I could get my hands on. However, I was surprised to find -- only a few pages into the book -- that there were concepts that I had either confused or distorted over the years. Concise and orderly, this book offers current theories and statistical information on many aspects of cancer prevention in a clear and understandable fashion. But the best part is (because having useful information is one thing, putting it to work is another) the recipe section which offers a wide assortment of really delicious dishes, from simple to exotic. it has actually convinced me -- a serious skeptic -- that it's possible to serve food which is not only flavorful and interesting, but healthful as well.

This book focuses on great foods that happen to be good.
Having read 4o% of all the recipes I was amazed at how tasty all of them were. The recipes are so favorful that you will find it hard to believe that these recipes are also healthy. I went to a bookstore and studied one recipe (for a complete dinner) made the meal and was beyond pleased with the finished product. The instructions are simple and the explanation of why certain food in certain combos are beneficial made me change my why of eating. This book is a must for anyone who just wants to enjoy a good dinner.

medically accurate and interesting; great, flavorful recipes
I received this book during the book tour distribution. As a physician I am basically skeptical about books claiming to reduce cancer rates. I was pleasantly surprised by the scientific accuracy of the text. I've since made at least 7 of the recipes, all of which are wonderful! I have found it difficult to locate cookbooks that include easy, fast recipes with low fat and reasonable flavor. Too often the recipes are easy but the ingredients are hard to find; or, the recipe is easy and the taste is bland. This great book meets all of my needs. I really didn't want to like this book, but I love it! And I learned a lot about nutrition to boot!

Traffic Engineering with MPLS
Published in Hardcover by Cisco Press (17 July, 2002)
Authors: Eric Osborne and Ajay Simha
Average review score:

The Premier Reference on MPLS and TE
For Internet backbone engineers, and those who wish to be, Traffic Engineering, or TE is a key skill. From my experience there is no greater expert in this area than Eric Osborne. This book is a great way for MPLS novice's to learn and add to their skills, and an essential "bookshelf" reference for any experienced network engineers. With an easy style, and a clear and concise manner, Eric and his co-author, Ajay Simha, provide a realistic guide to MPLS TE, including RSVP, SNMP, and troubleshooting. Unlike many similar works, it is clearly grounded in the reality of large networks, rather than theoretical vendor simulations. Eric and Ajay are right up there with Khalid Raza, Bruce Caslow, and Jeff Doyle, in terms of the "essential" authors. Highly recommended!

great book on MPLS TE
The book provides very thorough and insightful presentation of Traffic Engineering using MPLS and all scalability and operational issues associated with it. It also covers in detail Cisco's implementation of MPLS TE, configuration and troubleshooting techniques and commands. I personally liked the presentation of some concepts using case studies in a very realistic network configurations.

The authors are also kind enough to share a lot of their practical experience and "rules of thumb". With a target audience of network engineers and designers the book requires in-depth knowledge of IP routing, understanding of MPLS and experience in a carrier/ISP network environment.

For technical readers interested in deploying and running networks using MPLS TE I would highly recommend this book.

traffic engineering with MPLS
Very well written and with sufficient depth. I particularly like Chapter 9 (Network Design with MPLS TE) & 10 (MPLS TE Deployment Tips). However, most of the MPLS networks deployed have MPLS VPN service, if the authors have a case study or deployment considerations on MPLS VPN with MPLS TE, this book would be really great. On the whole, i strongly recommend this book for those who want to learn MPLS TE in Cisco platform.
Ajay & Eric, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us and keep up the good work !! :)

Voices from Appalachia
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (November, 2002)
Author: Roger Osborne
Average review score:

One of the "Voices" from Appalachia
Having been a childhood schoolmate of the author from elementary to high school, we shared personally many of the circumstances and situations Roger recounts with unique clarity of recall and poignance in this compelling work. From the opening paragraph to the closing, the reader, whether or not a native of Appalachia, will quickly find himself enjoying vicariously through each of the "voices" who contributed to this heartwarming anthology, an emotional rollercoaster ride which spans the entire realm of human experience. I truly am honored to have the privilege of being one of those "voices."

The way we lived it.
I have known Mr Osborne almost all my life. We attended the same school, and grew up in the coal fields of West Virginia. Roger is a very talented writer, and he brings our younger years back to life again. When you read his books, it is like you are back in time and living the years over again. If anyone has not read Roger's books, they should buy them, and once they do, they will not be able to put them down until the last word is read. My books are in a very special place in my house. I have all of Roger's books, and if it is possible that there are more to follow, I will have them to. God Bless Roger.

Blessed With Heart and Soul
Roger Osborne's "Voices From Appalachia" preserves the thoughts, hopes, dreams and struggles of the Appalachian people. The book is enlighting, entertaining and blessed with down home stories written from the heart by Roger and other Appalachian writers. "Voices From Appalachia" will live forever in my memory. The stories are about love, sharing, sacrifice, tragedy, grief, and forgiveness. Readers will find great joy in meeting and knowing the people of Appalachia. Roger Osborne is a master storyteller that shows gentle warmth and wit in his writings about growing up in and around mining towns of West Virginia. He documents an Appalachian boy's discovery of varied pleasures, puzzling paradoxes, and inescapable pain of finding his place in the community and the world. I also enjoyed reading Roger Osborne's three other books, "Land Of Yesterday, The Mountains Wept and Pilgrimage To An Appalachian Mining Camp."
